Das Leben Der Anderen

Carrie and I finally got around to watching the thriller-drama The Lives of Others (Das Leben Der Anderen), on the strong recommendation of several friends and co-workers.

This film won Best Foreign Film (2006) with good reason. If you've yet to see it, watch the trailer, then go put the DVD in your Netflix queue. I'm certain you won't regret it.

Although the film is unique, it brings to mind other great art, notably Schindler's List and Ayn Rand's We the Living.

If you've already seen it, you might be interested to learn of this criticism of the film as unrealistic. Also, I was saddened to learn that actor Ulrich Mühe, who played the lead role as Stasi agent Wiesler, died in July 2007 of stomach cancer, and that events in his own life were mirrored by the plot.
